Tour of Colorado Stage Race to Launch in 2026, Marking Big Return

by Alice

A new chapter in American professional cycling is set to begin with the launch of the Tour of Colorado, scheduled for September 2026. The announcement, driven by British event planning firm Infinity Events, marks a significant effort to revive elite stage racing in the United States.

The race will feature five stages across Colorado’s diverse and mountainous terrain. Organizers hope it will re-establish the state—and the nation—as a major hub for international cycling. The return of a high-level stage race follows years of absence after the demise of the Colorado Classic, Tour of California, and Tour of Utah, all of which last held editions in 2019.

A Legacy of Racing in Colorado

Colorado has long been a landmark for competitive cycling. In the 1970s, the Red Zinger Bicycle Classic laid the groundwork for what became the Coors Classic—an iconic race that grew into a two-week event and held global significance in the 1980s. Since then, American cycling fans have hoped to see major stage races return to the country, particularly to Colorado’s unique high-altitude landscape.

“The Tour of Colorado will be built on a strong foundation,” said Scott Taylor, Group Director of Infinity Events. “This state has a rich history of bicycle racing, stunning mountain scenery, and a passionate fan base. We are confident this event will offer an unforgettable experience for both riders and spectators.”

Sepp Kuss Applauds the Race’s Return

Sepp Kuss, winner of the 2023 Vuelta a España and a native of Durango, Colorado, expressed enthusiasm for the new race.

“It’s great news that a stage race will return to Colorado,” said Kuss. “The climbs here are brutal and beautiful. I’m excited for the peloton to experience the terrain that shaped me. Hopefully, the Tour of Colorado will inspire others to follow the sport—or even get on a bike themselves.”

Planning and Logistics Present a Major Undertaking

Hosting a multi-day road race in Colorado comes with logistical challenges. Organizers must obtain permissions from local, regional, and state authorities. Road closures, medical coverage, and security arrangements must be secured across thousands of miles.

Infinity Events has taken a cautious approach, ensuring political backing before approaching potential sponsors.

“We didn’t begin sponsor talks until we had the governor’s support,” Taylor told The Denver Post. “We want to be transparent about what we’re working on, but the next steps depend on securing the right commercial partners. We’re optimistic about the timing, but funding will be critical.”

Governor and National Cycling Body Offer Support

Colorado Governor Jared Polis voiced his endorsement of the event.

“There is no better state to train and compete in than Colorado,” Polis stated. “I look forward to the 2026 Tour of Colorado, which will attract top athletes from around the world. Events like this support our outdoor recreation economy and show why Colorado is a premier destination for sports.”

USA Cycling, the national governing body for the sport, has also backed the initiative.

“We are happy to support Infinity Events Group’s proposal,” said Brendan Quirk, President of USA Cycling. “Their vision for the Tour of Colorado is inspiring. It promises to be an important event for American cycling and a great opportunity for fans to witness world-class competition up close.”

Strategic Scheduling Aligns with North American Racing Calendar

To maximize participation, organizers plan to align the Tour of Colorado with other key North American races in September, such as the Maryland Cycling Classic and Canada’s Grands Prix Québec and Montréal. This timing allows top-tier international teams to build a competitive block on the continent.

While the initial 2026 edition will feature only a men’s event, organizers are already preparing to add a women’s race in future editions. Full route details and official race dates are expected by the end of 2025.

The Tour of Colorado represents more than just a race. It aims to rekindle America’s passion for professional cycling, reassert Colorado’s place on the global racing calendar, and inspire a new generation of riders across the country.
