Oro Valley, Ariz. (KGUN) — The Tucson Bicycle Classic is making its much-anticipated return this weekend, with the final stage of the race set to take place in Oro Valley. The event brings top cyclists, a fresh new course, and a significant boost to local businesses.
The three-day race will conclude on Sunday with the Oro Valley Circuit Race, which will feature a challenging 2.8-mile loop at Naranja Park. The race includes a tough uphill finish on Musette Drive, where competitors will test their endurance. Over 600 cyclists are participating in the event, including members of the Bicycle Ranch Racing Team. Steve Morgenstern, owner of Bicycle Ranch, expressed how personal this race is for him, as his team of about 25 racers will have six participants this weekend.
“Most of our people are grassroots,” Morgenstern said. “They’re moms and dads, hardworking people who also race. But to be out there and compete with professional-level cyclists is really exciting.”
The Tucson Bicycle Classic is expected to have a significant economic impact, bringing an estimated $180,000 to the local community. Cyclists, their teams, and spectators will be staying in local hotels, dining at restaurants, and shopping at local stores throughout the weekend.
Crystal Frank, the town’s Destination and Marketing Manager, highlighted the importance of this event, stating, “Bringing this kind of lodging, dining, and retail activity to our town is extremely helpful.”
The race will begin at 7 a.m. on Sunday and will continue until 5 p.m. Road closures will be in place during the event, affecting parts of Naranja Drive, Musette Drive near the finish line, and other nearby roads. Spectators are encouraged to arrive early and consult road closure maps to avoid any inconvenience.
