Brompton Unveils 12-Speed C-Line to Mark 50th Anniversary

by Alice

Brompton, the iconic British folding bike manufacturer, has launched a new 12-speed version of its C-Line model, celebrating the brand’s 50th anniversary.

First introduced in 1975 by founder Andrew Ritchie in west London, the C-Line has long been the flagship of Brompton’s folding bike range. Initially available in two and six-speed options, the C-Line now expands its offerings with a 12-speed model, providing more gearing choices for urban cyclists and commuters.

The new 12-speed C-Line is designed to offer increased range and better performance for riders navigating the city. Available in three vibrant colors—Flamingo Pink, Amethyst Lacquer, and Turkish Green—the 12-speed model also features the “Advance Rear Frame,” which enhances the bike’s maneuverability when half-folded, making it more convenient for urban use.

The C-Line’s off-road variant, the C-Line Explore, was recently named the best overall folding bike by Cycling Weekly, praised for its ability to handle hilly terrain with its six-speed setup.

In addition to the product launch, Brompton has made significant strides in sustainability. The company became a certified B Corporation in early 2024, underscoring its commitment to social and environmental responsibility. However, Brompton’s financial performance has faced challenges. In the year leading up to April 2024, the company’s profit margin dropped sharply, from £10.7 million to just £4,602 before tax. CEO Will Butler-Adams attributed the decline to missed sales targets and the difficulty in adjusting costs due to fixed expenses.

“The industry is still in turmoil and won’t improve significantly this year,” Butler-Adams stated in January. He also cited widespread discounting by companies trying to offload excess stock leftover from the COVID-19 pandemic as a contributing factor.

Looking forward, Brompton has received approval for the construction of its new eco-friendly headquarters. The move, originally planned for 2022, was delayed due to the ongoing challenges within the cycling industry. The brand will relocate from its current Greenford site in London to Ashford in Kent.

As Brompton celebrates its 50th anniversary, it continues to adapt and innovate, reaffirming its status as a leader in the folding bike market.
