Geraint Thomas to Retire at End of 2025, Eyes Final Tour de France

by Alice

Geraint Thomas, the celebrated Welsh cyclist, has confirmed that he will retire from professional cycling at the end of 2025. The 38-year-old plans to cap off his illustrious career with one final appearance in the Tour de France, followed by a closing chapter at the Tour of Britain, a race close to his heart.

In an interview on the Geraint Thomas Cycling Club podcast, the Olympic gold medallist and 2018 Tour de France victor shared that his retirement had been an open secret for some time. However, the decision to retire is now official, marking the end of his 19-year career.

“This year is going to be my final year racing my bike, which feels a bit surreal,” Thomas said. “It’s always been in the back of my mind, and for the past few years, I’ve thought each contract would be my last. But now, it’s time. This will be my final season.”

Reflecting on his long career, which includes two Olympic gold medals and three World Championship titles in the team pursuit, Thomas expressed no regrets about his decision. “You can’t keep doing it forever,” he noted. “I still love riding and racing, but I don’t want to reach a point where I feel like I should’ve stopped earlier.”

Grateful for the opportunity to retire on his own terms, Thomas highlighted how lucky he felt to make the decision himself, avoiding the injuries that have prematurely ended the careers of many of his peers. “I’m really fortunate to be able to call it myself and enjoy this last season fully,” he said. “This year is a season of lasts—last training camps, last races. I’ll miss the feeling of being super fit and flying up mountains.”

As for his final competitive year, Thomas revealed his goal to return to the Tour de France in top form. “It would be nice to go to the Tour one more time,” he said, expressing his desire to help the team’s leader, Carlos Rodríguez, if he is selected to ride for general classification. “And of course, I’d love to go for a stage win. That would be a pretty cool way to finish.”

In addition to the Tour de France, Thomas’s 2025 race schedule is expected to include events such as the Volta ao Algarve, the Volta a Catalunya, the Tour de Romandie, and the Tour de Suisse. His final race, however, is set to be the Tour of Britain, where he hopes to conclude his career on home soil.

“If I could pick any race to finish, it would be the Tour of Britain,” he said. “Rod Ellingworth, my old coach, is the race director, and I’ve asked him to pull a few favours to bring the final stage into Wales, maybe even Cardiff city centre. That would be an incredible way to end.”

Thomas’s retirement marks the end of an era for one of the most consistent and successful British cyclists of his generation.
