“Paddle For Porpoise”: A 1,000-Mile Journey to Save the Vaquita

by Alice

Sean Jansen, a surfer from San Clemente, California, embarked on a transformative journey to raise awareness for the endangered Vaquita Porpoise, one of the most threatened marine species in the world. His 1,000-mile stand-up paddleboard (SUP) adventure along the Sea of Cortez, detailed in his book Paddling with Porpoise, aimed not only to protect the Vaquita but also to inspire others to consider their impact on the environment.

Jansen’s journey was a deeply personal one. Growing up in Southern California, he spent much of his youth driving south to surf the Baja Peninsula. While the trips were filled with unforgettable surf sessions and stunning desert landscapes, Jansen eventually felt a sense of guilt for not giving back to the place that had provided so much. This self-awareness marked the beginning of his new mission.

After struggling with personal issues, including alcohol addiction, Jansen found a new sense of purpose in helping save the Vaquita. As one of the most endangered marine mammals, the Vaquita’s numbers have dwindled dramatically, largely due to illegal fishing practices. Jansen’s mission was clear: complete the first-ever solo 1,000-mile SUP journey to raise awareness for this elusive creature, while also confronting his own demons.

The journey, which took place between October and December 2023, was fraught with challenges, but one of the most harrowing moments occurred just 70 miles from his destination. Jansen had a close encounter with a bull shark, a potentially deadly situation. He recalls:

“Hundreds of times during the trip, I had seen things out of the corner of my eye, but this was no rock. I turned to look and saw a torpedo-shaped grayish-brown object swimming directly at me. My brain didn’t register what it was at first, but then I saw the tail swaying back and forth. The shark disappeared, but I still felt the event wasn’t over.”

Jansen continued paddling, aware that the shark was stalking him from behind, just inches from his board. Despite the danger, he pressed on, knowing that the mission to protect the Vaquita was far greater than any personal fear.

The Vaquita’s plight is rooted in illegal fishing practices linked to the Chinese market. Mexican cartels use gill nets to catch Totoaba fish, whose bladders, considered a delicacy with supposed healing properties, can sell for up to $10,000 per kilogram. The Vaquitas, which often get entangled in these nets, face imminent extinction unless immediate action is taken.

Jansen emphasizes that his journey is not about assigning blame but fostering compassion. He understands the complex web of issues surrounding the Vaquita’s decline, including drug trafficking and environmental degradation. “This book isn’t about finger-pointing, it’s about compassion for all things,” he states. His message is clear: the interconnectedness of these issues calls for understanding, not condemnation.

Sean Jansen’s book Paddling with Porpoise offers an inspiring narrative of adventure, resilience, and environmental advocacy. It’s a must-read for travelers and nature lovers seeking a deeper connection to the world around them. To learn more about Jansen’s journey or purchase his book, visit his website at jensensjournals
