In his first appearance at the 2025 Championship Tour, Mexico’s Al Cleland proved he’s ready to compete with the best, delivering an impressive performance at the Lexus Pipe Pro.
Cleland, a relative newcomer to the world tour, had arrived at North Shore uncertain if he would even make the cut for the 2025 season. His opportunity came when three-time world champion John John Florence decided to take a break, opening a spot for Cleland to join the elite field.
“I’ve never even been to a CT event,” Cleland admitted after receiving the call-up from the World Surf League (WSL). “Pipe will be the first CT I’ve ever seen in person.”
Despite his lack of direct experience at CT events, Cleland had dedicated his life to surfing and earned his place on the tour. His raw determination was on full display when he faced off against Jack Robinson in the Round of 32—a formidable challenge given Robinson’s reputation at heavy-water breaks.
“I just need the opportunity,” Cleland said earlier in the waiting period. “I earned my spot here like everyone else.”
When a double-barrel Backdoor wave came through, Cleland seized the moment. He powered through a shallow-water cavern, emerging triumphantly as the crowd roared. The judges rewarded his effort with an impressive 9.50 score.
Robinson, not one to back down, responded with his own incredible ride, securing the first perfect 10-point score of the 2025 season.
Many rookies would have folded under the pressure, but Cleland stood his ground. With remarkable poise, he found a backup score and held on for the win. Although he was eventually eliminated by Ian Gouveia in the Round of 16—after Gouveia delivered a smooth 9-point ride—Cleland’s equal ninth-place finish was a strong start to his season.
Cleland’s performance has turned heads, signaling to the surf world that he’s here to stay. With his fearless approach and relentless determination, he’s ready to take on any challenge, regardless of how big or heavy the wave.
