Australian sprinter Caleb Ewan has signed a one-year contract with Ineos Grenadiers, ending speculation about his future after departing Jayco AlUla.
The 30-year-old, who has claimed five stage wins at the Tour de France, was initially believed to have a contract with Jayco for 2025, but his name was recently removed from the team’s roster, fueling rumors of a potential move. Although reports suggested a deal with XDS Astana had fallen through, Ewan has now officially joined the British WorldTour team.
Ineos Grenadiers, who were in need of a top-tier sprinter, will look to Ewan to boost their performance in bunch sprints. The team had an available spot following the departure of Tom Pidcock and Theodor Storm’s move to Ineos’ development squad, Lotto Kern-Haus PSD Bank. Ewan returns to a WorldTour team after spending a single year at Jayco AlUla, following a five-year stint with Lotto.
In 2024, Ewan secured three victories, including a stage win at the Vuelta a Burgos in August. Despite struggling with injuries and form in recent years, he has previously triumphed at major events like the Tour de France, Giro d’Italia, and Vuelta a España.
“This is a really exciting new challenge for me and a fantastic opportunity to get back to my best with the incredible support of Ineos Grenadiers,” Ewan said in a statement. “My goal in 2025 is to return to winning big races. It’s been a few years since I’ve won major events, but I firmly believe I can rediscover my best form here. I’m only 30, and with the right guidance from Ineos, I know I can reach my peak again.”
Ewan also highlighted the team’s expertise in sprinting, noting, “I’ve often referenced Ineos in sprint stages for their riders’ ability to position themselves perfectly at decisive moments. I’m excited to work alongside such expertise.”
While his race program is still to be finalized, Ewan is eager to collaborate with the team on an exciting calendar for the upcoming season. He expressed confidence in a smooth integration, having already established relationships with several team members.
Ineos Grenadiers’ performance director, Dr. Scott Drawer, praised Ewan’s talent and potential. “Caleb’s achievements and ability to win big races speak for themselves. We understand his current goals and ambitions, and we’re excited to work with him to help him achieve them. With the significant changes we’ve made to our performance team for 2025, we’re confident we can create the right environment for Caleb and all our riders to succeed.”
Veteran Ineos rider Geraint Thomas also welcomed Ewan’s arrival. “I know Caleb well, and he’s a good mate. If he joins, that would be great,” Thomas said. “We lack a sprinter, and with 40% of races ending in a sprint, it would be a huge advantage to have him on the team.”
Ewan will join Ineos Grenadiers for a team camp, and with the support of the team’s world-class staff, his integration is expected to be swift.
