Meydi and Silva Win Historic World Junior Titles

by Alice

In a landmark achievement for surfing, Bronson Meydi of Indonesia and Luana Silva of Brazil claimed their nations’ first World Surf League (WSL) World Junior Titles in a thrilling competition at the Philippines’ Monaliza Point.

Meydi, a 20-year-old prodigy, has been a rising star in the surfing world since he was 11. His skills, first noticed in the remote areas of Indonesia, have since propelled him to the top of global surfing. His victory in the men’s division marked Indonesia’s first-ever WSL World Junior Championship win, a milestone that will resonate across the sport for years.

“I’m still in shock,” said an overwhelmed Meydi after being carried up Urbiztondo Beach. “This win means so much for Indonesia. It’s an amazing feeling, and I’m so proud to bring this trophy home.” Born and raised in Sumbawa, with Lakey Peak as his training ground, Meydi’s rise to fame was supported by Rizal Tandjung, a key figure in Indonesian surfing, who recognized his potential and provided mentorship in Bali.

In the men’s final, the waves at Monaliza Point had diminished, but the competition remained fierce. Meydi faced off against Australia’s Winter Vincent, who had posted a solid 17.84 in the final. However, it was Meydi’s flawless performance—highlighted by two consecutive full-rotation airs—that sealed his victory. With a perfect 10-point score, he earned an 18.80 total, securing the win.

“I knew I had to go big against Winter,” Meydi said, acknowledging his opponent’s strength throughout the event. “I’m just so happy with this win and look forward to celebrating with everyone who’s supported me.”

On the women’s side, Luana Silva made history by becoming the first Brazilian woman to win the WSL World Junior Title. At 20 years old, Silva has already made waves on the international stage, having competed for Brazil in the 2024 Paris Olympics and qualifying for the Championship Tour twice. However, she called this title her biggest achievement yet.

“I have no words,” Silva said, reflecting on her emotional win. “I’ve been going through a tough time after losing a childhood friend. I think she sent me that last wave, and this victory is for her and her family.”

In a dramatic final, Silva defeated Japan’s Kana Nakashio, trailing until the last moments. With just seconds to spare, Silva caught a wave and hit the lip twice to surge ahead, securing the win with a 12.23 score. While her score wasn’t the highest of the event, it was enough to claim victory.

“I grinded through all of my heats,” Silva explained. “I didn’t find a great wave but kept pushing through. I’m so happy right now.”

Both Bronson Meydi and Luana Silva have made their mark on the WSL World Junior Championship, and with their sights now set on the 2025 Challenger Series, the surfing world eagerly anticipates their continued rise in the sport.
