Maui’s rising star, Stevie Roberson, is known for his fearless approach to big-wave surfing, particularly at Jaws. But when the winter swells fade and the waves on his home island calm down, Roberson finds himself looking to the summer for new challenges. This year, that meant a surf trip to Indonesia, where the 19-year-old spent several months honing his skills and exploring some of the world’s most famous breaks.
Roberson made waves last winter with a standout performance at Jaws, earning a nomination for the Big Wave Challenge’s Ride of the Year and later securing the Young Gun title at the awards in Nazaré, Portugal. Despite the accolades, the end of the season left Maui’s surf scene with smaller waves, pushing the young surfer to seek out more action.
Thanks to his father’s connections in the Indonesian archipelago, Roberson set off for the surf-rich coastlines of Indonesia, where he could immerse himself in consistent, challenging conditions. During his stay, he tackled the long, powerful barrels of Desert Point, shredded the waves at Keramas, and took in the vibrant culture of Bali. His surf adventure wasn’t just about the waves—it was also a chance to spend time with some of the sport’s legends. Roberson connected with big names like Bruce Irons and Koby Abberton, and the experience proved invaluable for his growth as a surfer.
“It’s a different kind of energy when you’re surfing with guys who’ve done it all,” Roberson said. “You learn so much just from watching them and pushing yourself to keep up.”
Now, as winter returns to the Hawaiian Islands, Roberson is back at Jaws, picking up where he left off. Recent photos show him charging harder than ever, reaffirming his status as one of the most exciting young surfers to come out of Maui in recent years. With his talent, determination, and global surf experience, Roberson’s future in big-wave surfing looks brighter than ever.
Stay tuned for more updates on this rising star.
