Frankie Oberholzer, a renowned figure in the world of soul surfing, is facing a series of setbacks that have left him and his family in need of support. Known for his free-spirited approach to surfing and his collaborations with iconic surfers like Tom Curren, Oberholzer’s influence on the sport has spanned decades. Yet, recent tragedies have put the South African legend in a difficult position.
In the early 1990s, a young surfer in Northern California watched with awe as ESPN’s “Hot Summer Nights” featured a Rip Curl Search trip to Mozambique with Curren and Oberholzer. The stunning combination of surf, cinematography, and music had a profound impact on that young surfer—a memory that still drives him today. For many, Oberholzer’s name remains synonymous with adventure, exploration, and the soul of surfing.
However, life has taken a tough turn for Oberholzer in recent weeks. According to South African surf journalist Craig Jarvis, Oberholzer’s year took a tragic start when he lost his brother just days before Christmas. The following day, his dog was struck and killed by a car. And if that weren’t enough, a devastating fire recently destroyed his garage, which contained much of his livelihood.
Oberholzer, a skilled shaper and fisherman, relied on his garage to craft surfboards and fishing lures—his primary means of income. Tragically, the fire destroyed all of his equipment and materials. To make matters worse, his car, parked outside the garage, was also consumed by the flames.
In the wake of these hardships, the surf community has rallied around Oberholzer. Friends and supporters have launched a fundraising campaign to help the iconic surfer and his family rebuild.
