Greg Long, a celebrated figure in big-wave surfing and one of only 10 winners in the Eddie Aikau Invitational’s 40-year history, has announced his final participation in the prestigious contest. Long, who claimed victory in the 2009 Eddie, shared his decision during the opening ceremony at Waimea Bay on Friday, December 7, marking a poignant moment in surfing history.

“I remember being that star-struck kid, starting on the alternate list and eventually earning a spot on the invitee list,” Long reflected during his speech. “To still be here is an honor, but it’s time for me to step aside and allow the next generation to have this incredible opportunity. I’ve been so fortunate to be part of this event for so many years, but now it’s time to make space for others to realize the dream I’ve been living.”

Reflecting on Two Decades of Eddie Aikau

In his post, Long recounted his journey from a hopeful alternate to a celebrated champion. He described the surreal moment in 2009 when he won the Eddie, surrounded by his surfing heroes. Yet, for Long, the true reward wasn’t the victory but the privilege of honoring Eddie Aikau’s legacy.

“I recognize that as my greatest surfing accomplishment,” he wrote. “But of far greater significance has been the opportunity to celebrate Eddie’s life and perpetuate his legacy—one that embodies passion, humility, and love.”

Long likened competing in the Eddie to “a seat on one of the most beautiful, fun, and exhilarating rides in the world.” But with limited seats, he acknowledged the importance of stepping aside to allow new talent to experience the event’s magic.

A Legacy of Gratitude

Long expressed deep appreciation for the friendships, memories, and connections forged at Waimea Bay over two decades. He also extended heartfelt thanks to the Aikau family for their years of support and aloha.

“This is my final paddle out as an official invitee,” Long said. “Here’s to wishing for big swell, one last opportunity to honor Eddie, and the very best to those who will carry this torch into the future.”

Passing the Baton

Long’s announcement was met with admiration across the surfing community, celebrating his self-awareness and dedication to the sport. His legacy as a humble, passionate ambassador for big-wave surfing remains firmly intact.

For fans wishing to revisit Long’s iconic 2009 victory, it’s worth revisiting the moment he and Kelly Slater celebrated his triumph—a memory etched in surfing lore.

As Greg Long prepares for his final Eddie, he does so with grace, ensuring the next generation can carry forward the spirit of Eddie Aikau and the awe-inspiring tradition of Waimea Bay.
