Nathan Florence’s dedication to surfing is evident in his recent decision to remain in Ireland, where he and his brother Ivan, along with filmmaker Zoard, have been chasing swells during a promising early season in the Atlantic.
“It’s been pretty sleepy in the Pacific so far,” Nathan shared during the SURFER Big Wave Challenge awards in Nazare, Portugal, last weekend. “We plan to stick around Europe for a while and see what we can find, while others focus on the early swells back home.”
Florence’s commitment to his craft was tested when he considered a trip to Portugal for the awards. Concerned about potentially missing a significant swell at Mullaghmore, Nathan ultimately decided to make the journey. After some encouragement, he, along with his companions, attended the awards, where he received his second consecutive Surfer of the Year title.
What stands out about Nathan and his crew is their humility and camaraderie. Their appearance at the SIMA Watermans Awards earlier this summer reflected this spirit, as Nathan accepted the Surfer of the Year honors amid a backdrop of joy and positivity. As they often say, the best surfer is the one having the most fun—and Nathan is certainly embodying that ethos.
