French Transport Minister François Durovray is set to meet with cycling associations on Monday following the tragic death of 27-year-old cyclist Paul Varry, who was killed in Paris last week after a confrontation with a driver.
Varry was allegedly deliberately struck by an SUV on Tuesday, leading to preliminary murder charges against the driver. His death has ignited protests nationwide, with demonstrators demanding safer road conditions for cyclists and calling for an end to what they describe as “motorized violence.”
A passionate advocate for urban cycling, Varry was actively involved in improving cycling infrastructure in Saint-Ouen, a suburb north of Paris. On Saturday, hundreds gathered to pay tribute to him, including members of the cycling group Paris en Selle, who pledged to continue Varry’s mission for safer streets.
In a statement on social media platform X, Minister Durovray expressed condolences to Varry’s family, emphasizing that cyclists “have a place on the road.” He described the upcoming meeting as a vital opportunity to listen to and advocate for France’s cycling community, which is reeling from the impact of Varry’s death. This incident has reignited discussions on road safety and the protection of cyclists, particularly as the number of cyclists in urban areas continues to rise.
Alexis Fremeaux, co-president of the French Federation of Bicycle Users, remarked on the profound impact of Varry’s death, noting, “It stirred such emotion because this kind of murder is exceptional. However, the violence that cyclists face on the roads today is a widespread issue—every cyclist has a story to tell, from threats to dangerous encounters and even deliberate collisions.”
