Mateus Herdy Achieves Perfect 10 as Action Intensifies at Corona Saquarema Pro

by Alice

The stakes are high at the Corona Saquarema Pro, a critical event for aspiring Championship Tour (CT) qualifiers, where unpredictable outcomes often prevail. A standout moment came when Brazilian surfer Mateus Herdy executed a stunning “corkscrew backflip” during the Round of 32. The World Surf League (WSL) recognized his extraordinary feat with a rare perfect score of 10, marking the only one in the 2024 Challenger Series thus far.

“I felt incredible. After scoring two sevens early on, I lost priority by paddling for another wave, which frustrated me,” Herdy explained. “When the next wave arrived, I recognized the opportunity and went for it. It’s been a while since I made such a move in a heat, so it meant a lot.”

Reflecting on the legacy of Brazilian surf legends Gabriel Medina, Filipe Toledo, Italo Ferreira, and Yago Dora, Herdy remarked, “I need to do a lot more to be on that list. What they’ve achieved on the CT is remarkable, but I’m pleased with my performance today.”

In related news, Brazil’s Miguel Pupo secured his qualification for the 2025 Championship Tour following his Round of 32 result. His brother, Sammy Pupo, also qualified after his recent victory in Portugal.

“I’m super happy to qualify here, but I feel most of the work was done earlier in the year; this is just the culmination,” Miguel said. “Consistent results throughout the season motivated me to keep pushing toward my goals. Although missing the CT cut is tough, seeing peers like Ian and Alejo, as well as my brother qualifying, is incredibly inspiring. Competing alongside them will be amazing, not just for me but for Brazil as well.”

As it stands, the top four Challenger Series qualifiers are all Brazilian, alongside Australia’s George Pittar and France’s Marco Mignot. There are currently four spots remaining for next year’s men’s CT, while Canadian teen sensation Erin Brooks has already qualified for the women’s CT, leaving just one spot available.

The Saquarema Pro is scheduled to continue through October 20.
