KUALA LUMPUR – National track cycling coach Harnizam Basri is optimistic about Ridwan Sahrom’s potential performance at the upcoming World Championships in Denmark, set for Oct 16-20.
Ridwan, 23, has shown consistent form leading up to the event in Ballerup, where he will compete in the men’s individual sprint and keirin. His coach believes that this could be a breakthrough moment for the young rider.
“Ridwan has been in continuous training since the beginning of the year, and his recent performances have been promising,” Harnizam said in a recent statement. “We’re aiming for him to surpass his personal best in the 200-meter flying time trial.”
Harnizam noted that while Ridwan has consistently recorded sub-10 second times during training, he has yet to replicate that achievement in a race setting. “He’s done it in training many times, but we’re eager to see him achieve that during the competition,” Harnizam added.
Expectations are high for Ridwan, with hopes that he will reach at least the quarterfinals in the keirin and progress to the second round in the individual sprint.
Ridwan, the younger brother of Commonwealth Games keirin bronze medallist Shah Firdaus, 28, is now considered the second-best sprinter in Malaysia following the retirement of Datuk Azizulhasni Awang. This will mark Ridwan’s third appearance at the World Championships, having previously competed in the team sprint in 2022 and the keirin in 2023.
In addition to Ridwan and Shah, Malaysia will be represented by Anis Amira Rosidi and Izzah Izzati Asri at the championship event.
The cycling community will be closely watching as Ridwan strives to make his mark on the global stage.
