by Alice

BEACON – An 11-year-old child sustained serious injuries while hiking on Mount Beacon on Friday during an educational field trip organized by the Beacon City School District. The incident occurred around 2:30 p.m. and prompted a rescue operation involving the Beacon Fire Department, Beacon Medic 1, and the Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC).

The student was found on the Red (Casino) Trail, which begins at Howland and Wolcott Avenues and leads to the Mt. Beacon fire tower. Rescuers climbed the mountain and reached the child, who had sustained injuries to the head, shoulder, and leg.

A medevac helicopter was called to land at Memorial Park to transport the injured child to the hospital. Once rescuers assisted the child down the mountain, they loaded him into an ambulance. The ambulance then traveled a few blocks to the park, where the child was transferred to the helicopter and flown to Westchester Medical Center for further treatment.
