Nepal has been hit by heavy rains, floods and landslides, killing at least 59 people and leaving 44 missing. Rescue teams are actively searching for the missing.
Floods began sweeping across much of the country yesterday, prompting disaster management officials to warn of possible flash floods in several rivers. “So far, 59 people have been confirmed dead, 36 injured and 44 missing,” said Dan Bahadur Karki, a spokesman for the Nepali police.
Authorities have received more than 200 reports of floods and landslides, indicating that the death toll may rise further. Near the capital Kathmandu, several rivers overflowed, submerging nearby houses.
While disasters caused by heavy rains are common in South Asia between June and September every year, experts say climate change is exacerbating the frequency and severity of such disasters.
